Last-Minute Christmas Gift Ideas

Nothing says Christmas like a bottle of perfume and a book under the tree. Who could want more? Books and perfume make the best last-minute gifts. Ideal.

Bridge of Clay review

Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak One of the best books I’ve read this year (so far, I’ve nearly finished it!) Beautifully written, fantastic characters, sensitive descriptions. A father returns home to his 4 grown-up boys house with a curious proposal: he wants help to build a bridge. I love an author who is unafraid to be poetic.

Take Nothing With You

Take Nothing With You by Patrick Gale Eustace is reflecting on the past in a lead-lined room in hospital. He remembers his childhood, growing up in his parents’ house – a retirement home for the elderly. His school life was happy but uneventful… until he starts playing the cello. He learns music under the instruction of the legendary cellist Carla Gold. Through her teaching he engages with culture: art and literature, history and sound. He loves his new journey through the senses: the sound of the instrument and touch, the weight of it against his body. The nuances of life come into full colour for the first time. He notices something new about his mother too: suddenly, she seems to have other interests. She likes to meet up with Carla, for lunches, etc. His father either doesn’t seem to notice or mind her new friendship with his cello teacher. I’ll say no more. It’s a great read, really thought-provoking and tender.

Elinor Oliphant

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman If in doubt, plump for a best-seller. Eleanor Oliphant has won awards – it’s sold millions… and it’s out in paperback now! Perfect.

Floris Fleur

Floris Fleur Eau de Toilette Lovely. Floral, quite classic/old fashioned but in the best possible way, if you know what I mean? Crisp. Clear. Delicate but very much there. Long-lasting yet fresh.
