Pembroke Lodge used to be a humble molecatcher’s cottage, until Elizabeth, Countess of Pembroke begged King George III to bestow it to her in around 1787. Sir John Soane and Henry Holland extended the building on her behalf and made it into the building we see today.
Since then, it has passed through the hands of the Earl of Errol, husband of one of William IV’s daughters, and the Countess of Dunmore. In 1847 Queen Victoria granted the lodge to Prime Minister Lord John Russell. Visitors included Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens and Tennyson.
