Day two of our York trip took us to the breathtaking York Minster.
It is the second largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe.
The building of York Minster began in 1230 and was completed over 200 years later in 1472.
The present Minster sits above the heart of one of the most important military bases in Roman Britain.
Archaeologists knew that the Minster lay over the centre of York’s Roman fortress. But they didn’t know how many layers of history they would find.
They unearthed an very colourful history. Archaeologists uncovered evidence of Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans who all recognized the great importance of this site, as from here they could control northern England. They built fortresses and churches as symbols of power.
In the AD 700s, York Minster became renowned for its school and library.
It’s an absolute must-see in York.
